Description

Lawton's Hope is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and timber-frame with brick infill, featuring brick extensions on the northeast side. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and has sandstone rubble and brick chimneys. The building has a rectangular plan with a garden front facing southwest.

It has a cellar, two storeys, and attics. The southwest elevation includes two windows with mid-20th century glazing bar sashes on the left side, and a mid-19th century two-leaved panelled door located under an early 20th century open gabled porch to the right of centre. There are three blocked mullioned and transomed two-light windows, with two on the first floor and one on the ground floor. The timber frame features three slightly joggled rectangular panels on each floor.

On the northwest elevation, there are two more blocked mullioned and transomed windows on the first floor. The southeast elevation has two framed gables, while the northeast elevation has two similar gables that are obscured by a mid-19th century brick service extension. The interior has not been inspected, but the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England notes a staircase with heavy turned balusters and newels with shaped pendants.
