Description

The canal milepost located approximately 200 metres east of Foss Bridge is a late 18th-century cast iron post. It features a rounded head and a moulded edge, with raised letters that read: '7 MILES FROM THE TRENT'. The number 7 is displayed on a riveted-on plate. The Grantham Canal, for which this post serves as a marker, was authorized in 1793 and this section was constructed by the surveyor James Green, who was employed by Lord Middleton of Wollaton Hall.
