Description
The Grantham Canal milepost, located approximately 300 metres west of Main Street in Hickling, dates from the late 18th century. This cast-iron post features a rounded top and moulded edges, with raised letters that read: "13 MILES FROM THE TRENT." The number 13 is displayed on a riveted-on plate. The canal was authorized in 1793, and this section was constructed by the surveyor James Green, who was employed by Lord Middleton of Wollaton Hall.
