Description
The Grantham Canal milepost, dating from the 18th century, is located approximately 1000 metres east of Main Street in Hickling. This cast-iron post features a rounded top and a moulded edge. It has raised letters that read: "13¾ MILES FROM THE TRENT," with the figure 13¾ displayed on a riveted-on plate. The canal was authorized in 1793, and this section was constructed by James Green, Surveyor, who was employed by Lord Middleton of Wollaton Hall.
