Description
The Grantham Canal milepost, located approximately 100 metres north of Spencer's Bridge, dates from the late 18th century. This cast-iron post features a rounded top and moulded edges, with raised letters that read: "9¾ MILES FROM THE TRENT." The number 9¾ has been painted on. The canal was authorized in 1793, and this section was constructed by James Green, a surveyor employed by Lord Middleton of Wollaton Hall.
