Description

The headstones in the churchyard of the Church of St Margaret, located west of the tower on the south side, are primarily from the 18th century and made of slate.

From west to east, the headstones include:

  1. A small, shaped headstone featuring a relief hourglass at the top, dedicated to Edward Bulton, who died in 1754.
  2. A rectangular headstone with a round-faced winged angel, commemorating John Bird, who died in 1724, along with his children who died in infancy and his wife Ellin.
  3. A fairly plain rectangular headstone for James Poulton, who died in 1763.
  4. A tall, shaped headstone with fine decoration for William, son of Richard and Hannah Wright, who died in 1803, signed by Wright, Hickling.
  5. A rectangular headstone with fine detail for Mary Archer, who died in 1777.
  6. A fairly plain shaped headstone for Ann, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Archer, who died in 1792.
  7. A rectangular headstone with fine, flowing detail for Sarah Archer, who died in 1768, signed by Barnes.
  8. A similar headstone for John Archer, who died in 1767, signed by Jas. Sparrow.
  9. A broad rectangular headstone with a moulded surround and relief cherubs' heads in the corners, dedicated to John Mackley, who died in 1752.
  10. A very tall headstone featuring a relief in the center oval, divided vertically, for John Mackley, who died in 1811, and his wife Margaret, who died in 1810, signed by Jones, Bingham.
  11. A broad rectangular headstone, divided vertically, for Henry Archer, who died in 1761, and Elizabeth Archer, who died in 1758.
  12. A small rectangular headstone for Samuel, son of Henry and Elizabeth Archer, who died in 1742 at the age of 21.
  13. A small rectangular headstone with a round-faced winged angel for Richard Dexter, who died in 1727.
  14. A similar headstone for Sarah, wife of Thomas Dexter, who died in 1732.
  15. A rectangular headstone with a relief winged cherub's head, divided vertically, for Richard Dexter, who died in 1761, and Elizabeth Dexter, who died in 1767. This is noted as an excellent example of the type.
  16. A large rectangular headstone with a moulded surround and relief in the corners of an hourglass with an entwined serpent, dedicated to Elizabeth, the wife of Henry Archer, who died in 1754, along with their children who died in infancy.
