Description

The remains of the Church of St Mary are a historic ruin located on New Road in Colston Bassett. The church dates back to the 12th century, with a north arcade primarily from the 14th century and a tower that was altered in the 15th century. There are also some modifications from the 18th century to the north arcade. The structure is built of thinly coursed rubble, with the upper part of the tower made of ashlar.

The nave consists of three bays, with the north aisle now missing, while the south aisle and transept remain. The chancel is also three bays long, and there is a west tower. Notable surviving features include two Norman circular piers and one respond with scalloped capitals. Above these, the pointed arcade has round-arched 'Gibbs' windows inserted, along with two-light windows featuring Y-tracery in the chancel. The south transept has a three-light window with reticulated tracery on the east side, although the large south window is no longer present. The tower includes two-light openings for the bell chamber, a quatre-foil frieze with corner gargoyles, and a crenellated parapet with corner pinnacles.

In 1892, the Church Commissioners ordered the removal of the roof, leading to the church's ruinous state, coinciding with the construction of the new Church of St John. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
