Description

The village cross in Colston Bassett is a significant landmark, with an early base that possibly dates back to the 15th century and a shaft added in 1831. It features a sandstone base and a limestone shaft, set on an octagonal four-step podium. The classical shaft has an entasis on the moulded base, topped with a square abacus and a ball and stalk finial. This shaft was erected to commemorate the coronation of William IV. The cross is located in an important village center and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument No. 40.
