Description

The Grantham Canal milepost, located approximately 150 metres east of Main Street in Hickling, dates from the late 18th century. This cast-iron post features a rounded top and a moulded edge, with raised letters that read: "13¼ MILES FROM THE TRENT." The figure "13¼" is painted on the post. The canal was authorized in 1793, and this section was constructed by James Green, a surveyor working for Lord Middleton of Wollaton Hall.
