Description
The Grantham Canal milepost, located approximately 600 metres south of Colston Bridge, is a late 18th-century cast-iron post. It features a rounded head and a moulded edge, with raised letters that read '9¼ MILES FROM THE TRENT'. The figure 9¼ is displayed on a riveted-on plate. The canal was authorized in 1793, and this section was constructed by the surveyor James Green, who was employed by Lord Middleton of Wollaton Hall.
