Description
69A West Gate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It was built around 1800, with a mid-19th century addition and some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared stone, featuring stone dressings, and has a hipped and gabled slate roof with a brick stack on the side.
The structure has three storeys on one side and two storeys on the other, with a total of six windows across the front. The West Gate facade includes two plain sash windows on the ground floor, and above them, to the left, there is a smaller nine-pane sash window, with a blocked window to its right. All these windows have projecting surrounds. The ground floor features a mid-20th century shop front that was altered in the late 20th century, which includes a glazed double corner door with sidelights, flanked by single-pane windows on each side.
On the right side, facing St John Street, there is a three-storey block that has a central round-arched glazing bar stair window. On the first floor, there is a blocked window to the left and two twelve-pane sash windows to the right. Above this, to the left, is a smaller nine-pane sash window, with two similar windows to the right, all having projecting surrounds. The ground floor on this side is blank and rendered. To the right, there is a two-storey addition that features two smaller twelve-pane sash windows and a blank ground floor.
