Description
61 and 63 West Gate are two houses that have been converted into a nightclub and shop. They date from the mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th and late 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and feature a slate roof with a central rendered brick chimney stack.
Architectural details include quoins, a sill band on each floor, a moulded eaves cornice, and gutters supported on brackets. The buildings rise to three storeys and have a two-window range. The second floor features two simplified Venetian windows with projecting surrounds and keystones; the right window retains its glazing bars, while the left has been reglazed as a wooden-framed cross casement with a blank fanlight. Above these, there are two three-light windows with stone flush mullions and projecting surrounds, with the right window being a nine-pane sash and the left a reglazed cross casement.
On the ground floor, there is a rendered bay to the left with a large recessed entrance, and to the right, a 20th-century door. Additionally, there is a late 20th-century shop front with a fascia, which includes an extra window that overlaps the adjacent building to the right.
