Description

No. 13 Barn Hill is a fine house built in 1740, as indicated by the date on the rainwater head. The building is constructed of ashlar and features two storeys with attics. It has three dormers, two of which have plain pediments, flanking a central dormer with a semi-circular pediment. The house is adorned with a good stone modillion eaves cornice and a moulded stone band at the first-floor cills. The rusticated quoins and ground floor window frames enhance its architectural detail.

There are five windows in total, with those on the upper floor having shouldered architraves, a pulvinated frieze, and pediments, and they do not have glazing bars. The doorcase is in a plain Roman Doric style, featuring a pediment and a triple keystone above a fielded and carved door, which is accessed by three steps. A foot scraper is present, and to the left is a plain door with four panels. The property is complemented by good wrought iron railings on a small projecting stone-capped wall attached to the house.

Inside, the house contains several fine panelled rooms and a good staircase from the period. Two of the fireplaces are particularly noteworthy for their exceptional craftsmanship, featuring woodwork with carved swags and masks.

This property is part of a group that includes the garage premises to No. 9A, Nos. 9, 10, the Sunday School, and Nos. 12 to 17, as well as Nos. 1 to 8 on All Saints' Place.
