Description
No. 8 Long Street is a building dated 1737, featuring three storeys and cellars. The ground floor is made of rusticated ashlar on a projecting plinth, with deep stone strings at the first and second floor levels and above the second floor windows. The stuccoed parapet has a moulded stone coping. The upper part of the building is brick framed with stone pilasters, and the strings bite over the pilasters.
There is a slightly projecting central feature with narrow vertical stone edging, where the parapet breaks forward. This feature includes a central panel with a stone surround, with the head of the second-floor panel formed by a string. The first-floor panel has a segmental head.
On the ground floor, there is a central six-panel door with a plain arched fanlight, plain architrave, and keystone, surrounded by narrow pilasters, double scroll brackets, and a segmental moulded stone hood. The hipped slate roof covers the building.
The second floor has four windows with flat stone surrounds and keystones. The first floor features two Palladian windows, with the central window being flat-headed and supported by square Ionic piers and an entablature with a convex frieze. The architrave above has a solid stone tympanum.
The ground floor has four windows set in arched recesses with radiating voussoirs and keystones, along with two cellar windows. All glazing bars have been altered. The rear of the house is brick with stone quoins and window surrounds, featuring three windows and a later one-storey addition.
Notable details include fine cast lead rainwater heads at the ends of the back of the house, a good lion head brass knocker, and handles. The interior retains contemporary panelling and enriched plaster ceilings.
