Description
No. 18 St George's Square is a building dating from 1671, with elements from the early 18th century and possibly earlier. It stands two storeys high with attics, constructed in ashlar stone. The roof is made of stone slate and features three hipped dormers along with two stone chimneys. The left side of the building has block rusticated quoins. There are five windows, which are double-hung sashes with glazing bars set in stone surrounds, and each window is topped with a rectangular fanlight. The building has a wood modillion eaves cornice and a moulded plinth.
Inside, there is a fine panelled entrance hall that includes shouldered moulded doorcases and an impressive carved overmantel with a pediment and scroll brackets. The beams are covered with moulded casing, and there is a partly restored stone fireplace. One of the windows retains heavy glazing bars, while the others have been replaced with a later type.
No. 18 is part of a group that includes the Church of St George, Nos 1 to 7 (consecutive), Nos 9 to 12 (consecutive), an outbuilding to No. 12, and Nos 14 to 22 (consecutive). It also forms a group with Nos 25 to 26 St Mary's Street.
