Description

19 St George's Square is a significant building dating from 1671, with a front that reflects early 18th century design. It has two storeys and attics, constructed in ashlar stone. The hipped stone slate roof features two rows of hipped dormers with glazing bars. The building is adorned with two finely moulded rusticated chimney stacks, similar to those found at Linden Hall in Rutland.

There are six windows on the facade, which are double-hung sashes with original glazing bars set in moulded frames that extend into bands above. The first-floor windows have small rusticated keystones, while the top-floor windows feature plain keystones. The ground floor windows have 19th-century sashes and additional ornamentation on the keystones. A small plinth with inset foot scrapers is present, along with rusticated quoins and a modillion eaves cornice. The entrance features a six-panel door in a moulded stone case topped with a broken scrolled pediment supported by brackets.

Inside, the house boasts a fine staircase and several panelled rooms, the most notable being on the ground floor, dated 1674. This room features rectangular panelling with bolection moulds, a classic stone fireplace with a modillion cornice and Ionic pilasters, panelled ceilings, and moulded casing on the beams. The staircase and back of the house retain 17th-century windows, and two other rooms also have impressive fireplaces. This house is recognized as an important example of its architectural style.

19 St George's Square is part of a group that includes the Church of St George and several other adjacent properties, enhancing its historical context.
