Description
No. 1 St George's Square is a building dating from 1671, situated on the north side of the square. It is a two-storey structure with attics, constructed in ashlar stone. The roof is made of stone slate and features two large gabled dormers. The eaves cornice is finely decorated with small rosettes between dentils, and below it is an egg and dart frieze along with a stone-framed fascia supported by scroll brackets at each end. There is a smaller moulded cornice beneath this.
The building has three windows, each set in shouldered moulded architraves with moulded wooden cills and triple keystones, and they do not have glazing bars. On the ground floor, there is a remnant of the original six-panel door, which includes two glass panels, framed in a plain stone architrave. To the right of a central segmental-headed window, which features a rusticated arch and a sliding sash with glazing bars, is a small plain window. This central window represents an early type of shop window.
No. 1 St George's Square is part of a group that includes the Church of St George, Nos 1 to 7 (consecutive), Nos 9 to 12 (consecutive), the outbuilding to No. 12, and Nos 14 to 22 (consecutive). It also forms a group with Nos 25 to 26 St Mary's Street.
