Description
Nos. 25 and 26 St Mary’s Street form a single block facing west across the east end of the street. The main section of the building dates to around 1765, although there is evidence of earlier construction. The exterior is faced in ashlar and features a modillion eaves cornice and a small parapet with three stone urns and a ball finial. The roof is mansarded and covered in stone slates, with stone-capped gable ends; No. 25 has two dormers. No. 25 incorporates a two-storey canted bay window with three lights and an urn finial, and a single window to the right with an urn finial to the right-hand quoin. A 19th-century carved door is set beneath a semi-circular glazed fanlight, topped by an open pediment, and the building stands on a plinth.
No. 26 is slightly lower than its neighbour and has two hipped dormers. It shares the same cornice with modillions and parapet. The roof is not mansarded. The front elevation has three windows beneath a three-panelled doorway, the centre of which has a moulded stone surround and a triple keystone, with hung sashes and glazing bars. There are two windows on the ground floor. A 19th-century door is set in an architrave with an open pediment and semi-circular fanlight, and there is a plinth and an iron foot scraper.
The elevation of No. 26 facing St George's Square (North) has a recessed centre between two projecting wings, linked by a wall containing an entrance door. The centre section is two storeys high with a central Venetian window on the first floor, situated beneath an open, modillioned pediment that breaks the eaves line. Two dormers, one segmental and one gabled, are present. Flanking windows are set in shouldered architraves. Below a horizontal band are two segmental blocked recesses, now containing windows. A garage section projects to the right. This section dates to the early 19th century and has a hipped roof covered in Welsh slate. The two-storey ashlar elevation has two windows above the door and window, with hung sashes and glazing bars. A casement window with glazing bars is located above the garage doors, which are set in a segmental architrave with a keystone.
The interior of No. 26 has a good panelled ground floor room with wall cupboards and an original chimneypiece.
The building forms part of a group with Nos 2 to 26 St Mary’s Street, with No. 13 Maiden Lane, and with Nos 1 to 7, Nos 9 to 12, the outbuilding to No. 12, and Nos 14 to 22, St George’s Square.
