Description

The Old Theatre, located at 27A St Mary's Street, is a notable building dating from 1671. It is constructed of ashlar and features two storeys with rusticated quoins. The exterior is adorned with a moulded modillion cornice and a parapet, topped by a hipped old slate roof that has an arrow vane at its peak.

The façade includes five windows, four of which have shouldered stone surrounds, large triple keystones, and moulded cills, while the central window is round-headed, featuring a multiple keystone and cill supported by moulded brackets. This central window is elevated above the others on the first floor. The ground floor has two side doors, each with six panels, set within plain stone surrounds that also have triple keystones and chamfered jambs. There are two additional windows with plain stone surrounds.

A prominent central doorcase is highlighted by panelled pilasters and an open pediment, topped with a large semi-circular fanlight above double doors with six panels and 'Gothic' glazing. The interior has been gutted and is currently used as a club, but it retains one very fine doorcase at the main entrance. This doorcase is designed in Roman Ionic style, featuring elaborate mouldings, a frieze, and an open modillion pediment.

The Old Theatre is part of a group with Nos 27 to 40 St Mary's Street.
