Description
The Toft, located at 43 High Street, was built in 1673 and refronted in the mid-19th century. This three-storey building is constructed of red brick and features a pantile roof with a moulded eaves cornice. Originally, it had two storeys and attics. The facade has a 2-1-1 window arrangement, with the third bay from the left projecting forward. The windows are hung sashes with glazing bars and have rusticated lintels with keystones. The first-floor windows are adorned with hoods supported by console brackets, and two ground-floor windows have shutters. There are string courses at the cills and a brick plinth with a foot scraper.
The entrance is framed by fluted Tuscan pilasters and a cornice, with panelled reveals. The main door consists of five fielded panels beneath a four-light rectangular fanlight. To the left, there is a door with six fielded panels topped by a three-light rectangular fanlight under a rusticated lintel.
Inside, The Toft showcases fine examples of late 17th-century work, including panelling, elaborate over-doors, and a well-crafted staircase with finials and pendants. The building is part of a group with Nos 29 to 35 (odd), 35A to 69 (odd), and 73 to 93 (odd), while Nos 37 to 41 (odd) are of local interest.
