Description
22 St Mary's Street is a notable building dating from around 1770. It is two storeys tall with attics and constructed from coursed rubble. The roof is covered with stone slates and features three cambered dormers, which contain double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The building has a moulded eaves cornice adorned with heavy dentils.
There are five windows on the upper floor, each framed with moulded shouldered stone and topped with a triple keystone, and these windows are hung sashes without glazing bars. A band runs around the bases of the windows, connecting with a band between the storeys. The ground floor has four windows with plain stone architraves that include keystones, and the band continues along the cills.
The entrance features a 19th-century fielded door set within an 18th-century doorcase, which has a rusticated surround, a pulvinated frieze, and a moulded pediment, also with a triple keystone. At each gable end, there are five joined stone chimney stacks. Additionally, there is a Sun Insurance plaque numbered 512975.
This building is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 26 on the same street.
