Description
The Vaults Public House, located at No 19 St Mary's Street, is a building with origins likely dating back to the 16th century, although it features late 18th century window designs. It has two storeys and attics, constructed from rendered stone, topped with an old slate roof that includes one prominent dormer. The building has a plain eaves cornice and features two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the upper floor. The ground floor includes a three-light window with glazing bars and a six-panel door that has a glazed rectangular fanlight above it. On the first floor, one gable projects forward to the right, and there is a double-hung sash window situated above a large carriage entrance, which is adorned with a moulded bressumer and a 16th-century boss below.
The Vaults Public House itself continues from this structure, also comprising two storeys and attics. It features two gabled dormers with casement windows. The first floor showcases half-timbering and has two windows with two and three lights, respectively, both with leaded casements. The ground floor is made of coursed rubble and includes one three-light window and one single window, both double-hung sashes with glazing bars, flanking a door that has a three-light rectangular fanlight above it. An inset foot scraper is also present. The building is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 26 St Mary's Street.
