Description

The Assembly Rooms, located at 22 St George's Square, were built in 1671 and are designated as a Grade II* listed building. This single-storey structure is constructed from ashlar stone and features a moulded cornice and parapet, topped by a stone slate hipped roof. The façade includes two blocked round-headed windows with moulded surrounds, flanking a high central door that is accentuated by block rusticated pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, and a moulded pediment. The high double doors are set beneath a glazed fanlight.

To the right, there is an extension that continues the parapet but is made from coursed rubble. This extension has two windows with stone rusticated surrounds and triple keystones, featuring double-hung sashes with glazing bars. A band runs along the cills. On the ground floor, there is one window and a door in a plain stone surround, also with a triple keystone and a rectangular fanlight with glazing bars.

While the interior does not contain any outstanding features, it maintains a good proportion and has not been significantly altered. The Assembly Rooms have historical connections with No 27 St Mary's Street.

The building is part of a group that includes the Church of St George, Nos 1 to 7 (consecutive), Nos 9 to 12 (consecutive), an outbuilding to No 12, and Nos 14 to 22 (consecutive). Additionally, it forms a group with Nos 25 and 26 St Mary's Street.
