Description
14 and 15 St George's Square are a pair of houses dating from 1671, incorporating much medieval masonry and featuring numerous gables with an uneven plan. Originally a manor, they were used as a Dower House. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble and have a stone slate roof, surrounding a small court on three sides.
The windows are primarily hung sashes, but there is one late 17th century window with a mullion and transom, featuring leaded lattice. Number 14 has a small oriel upper window with two lights in moulded rectangular frames, set triangularly under a tiny stone hood, resembling a lantern. It also has a six-panel entrance door with a semi-circular fanlight, built into a stone porch at the angle of the building. Number 15 features a large gable facing the street, which contains a prominent two-storey bowed window with glazing bars and a small latticed casement in the gable. The front elevation is rendered, with a modern ashlar outshot and a simple wooden trellis porch. The buildings were mainly demolished in the early 18th century, and there are billet mouldings on the basement beams.
These houses, along with the Church of St George, Nos 1 to 7, Nos 9 to 12, the outbuilding to No 12, and Nos 14 to 22, form a group of significant historical buildings.
