Description
No 2 St Mary's Place is an early 18th-century building that stands two storeys high with attics, constructed in ashlar with stone dressings. It features a stone slate roof adorned with three dormers: two gabled and one cambered. The windows are hung sashes with glazing bars. The building has stone stacks and a dentil eaves cornice.
There are five windows arranged between channelled rusticated pilasters. The upper windows are framed with joined block rusticated architraves that have large triple keystones and plain reveals, while the ground floor windows have round heads with a band at impost height. A moulded plinth rises to the ground floor cills. The entrance is marked by a Roman Doric doorcase with a pediment and pulvinated frieze, leading to a door that has four carved panels and four glass panels beneath a semi-circular fanlight.
One of the ground floor windows has been converted into a three-panel door that leads into the adjoining No 3. The interior dates from the 19th century and includes a lobby under a glazed fanlight and a later 19th-century staircase.
Nos 1 to 4, the Town Hall, and the Church of St Mary form a group with this building.
