Description

The Town Hall, built in 1777 and designed by architect Lovell, is a Grade II* listed building located on St Mary's Hill. It features a terrace with nine stone steps and an iron handrail. The structure has three storeys constructed in ashlar, with a rusticated ground floor and chamfered rusticated quoins. The top storey has six windows that flank a central cartouche displaying the town arms. The first floor is designed with a 2-3-2 window arrangement, and the central section of the building projects forward, also featuring rusticated quoins. The upper windows are adorned with ornamental architraves that include keystones and glazing bars. A panelled parapet and a moulded cornice with a frieze, similar to the window architraves, complete the top of the building.

The ground floor has six windows set in round-headed architraves with keystones, and there is a band between the ground and first floors. The central entrance consists of modern double doors beneath an ornamental semi-circular fanlight, while another doorway, created from a window space, features a six-panel door.

The return elevation consists of three storeys with seven windows, echoing the main front's architectural style and also containing a cartouche at the centre of the top floor. The third-floor windows have had their glazing bars replaced. A round-arched rusticated doorway on this elevation has double doors with four panels and two panels above, topped with a semi-circular glazed fanlight.

Nos 1 to 3 form a group, and the return elevation also contributes to a group with Nos 1 to 4 and the Church of St Mary on St Mary's Place.
