Description

No. 26 is a terrace house built around 1770, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and has a slate roof. The house has a double depth plan and rises three storeys, with an attic and basement, appearing as a full four storeys at the rear due to the slope of the site.

The front features two windows, all of which are twelve-pane sash windows, including a paired sash dormer. To the left is a six-panel door set within a stone Doric doorcase that has three-quarter columns and a closed pediment. The building has a plinth, platband, cornice, blocking course, and parapet, which are also present at the rear and are slightly lower than the adjoining No. 25. The rear includes paired twelve-pane dormers above twelve-pane windows on the second and ground floors, but the ground floor window has been modified to a deep twelve-pane with reticulated balconettes. There is also a door leading to the basement.

The interior was inspected in 1985 and featured an original 18th-century marble fireplace with yellow-veined marble and elliptical arches on either side. There were Adam cornices and a fireplace on the ground floor, along with fine friezes. The basement contained a Georgian fireplace and a plain dresser, as well as a staircase with a Doric newel. However, by 1987, the fireplaces had been stolen or removed, and many features were lost.

In front of the house, there is a simple spearhead railing that returns at the ends, set on an ashlar curb with a curved top. The adjacent house to the left, which terminates the terrace and returns to Stanhope Place, is a 20th-century reconstruction.
