Description

No. 1, Great Stanhope Street is a late 18th-century terrace house, with alterations from the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. The house is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has three windows. The attic has two twelve-pane sash dormers above horizontal bar casement windows. The first floor windows are two-light casements with transom lights and a cast iron balcony rail supported on six brackets. The ground floor windows are two-light casements, and a small light provides access to the basement on the left side. The central entrance features a six-panel door within a Doric stone doorcase with three-quarter columns and a closed pediment. A wooden plate runs beneath the stone platband, and the property has a moulded cornice, blocking course, and parapet, all returned to the front at Little Stanhope Street. The front has a returned mansard roof with a deep, two-stage ashlar stack and a single twelve-pane sash dormer. A panelled door in an architrave, with a hood, provides access to No. 5, Little Stanhope Street.

A 1981 inspection revealed that No. 1’s interior lacks particularly interesting features while No. 2 has a Georgian fireplace with a hob grate and original staircase with Georgian colonnettes. No. 3 has an original fireplace and a good Regency fireplace with roundels. No. 4 includes a large dresser in the basement with doors containing octagonal glazing and diamond inserts and retains original 18th-century architraving.

The frontage has simple cast iron railings, returned at the end and to the doorway, set on an ashlar curb with a rounded top.
