Description

No. 1 St Ann's Place is an end-of-terrace corner house built around 1771. It features a limestone ashlar exterior and a slate mansard roof. The property has two storeys, an attic, and a basement. The east front, which faces a courtyard, includes plain sash windows, with two dormers above three first-floor windows, and two additional windows plus a panelled door beneath a flat hood supported by shaped stone brackets. To the left, there is a pavement grille above a basement laylight. The building has a slight plinth that meets the pavement, a mid platband, a full-width wood plate, a small cavetto cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet. A large ashlar chimney stack is located at the rear. The narrow west front has a plain sash window and a small four-pane window, while the lower ground floor features a former doorway that has been blocked with brickwork. The front of the house faces a stone-paved courtyard. The interior has not been inspected, but the house underwent extensive repairs in 1983-84 by architect Aaron Evans after being in poor condition. This property is part of a significant group of artisan housing arranged around a close.
