Description

No. 31 is a terrace house dating from 1764 to 1770, with alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a double Roman tile roof. The house is a single-bay town house of generous size, featuring a double mansard roof and a deep, three-floor gabled rear wing, with the entrance and staircase positioned to the left.

The external facade is three storeys high, with an attic and basement. It has sash windows with glazing bars, including a twelve:twelve:eight-pane dormer window at the second floor, paired twelve-pane windows to the ground and first floors, and two twelve-pane windows in the basement. Window surrounds are splayed across the three main floors. The main entrance is a five-panel door within an architrave, topped with a flat cornice, a modillion cornice which is stopped to the ends, a small blocking course, and a parapet. Coped party walls separate it from adjacent properties, with a large stack shared with No. 32. The rear elevation features staggered plain sash windows and two dormers. The gabled wing has paired plain sash windows at each level in its end wall.

The interior of the property has not been inspected.

Subsidiary features include a basement area enclosed by a simple railing on a stone curb, which returns to the doorway and incorporates a gate for access to a 20th-century basement staircase.

The building’s external fabric suggests a phased construction, with the overall terrace displaying a consistent level of detail despite variations in elevation. The terrace was built in stages, as indicated by straight joints in the stonework.
