Description

No. 26 is a terrace house built between 1764 and 1770, with some alterations from the 19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a double Roman tile roof. This house is unusually narrow for a terrace, with the entrance and staircase located on the left side.

The exterior consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with one window on each floor. All windows are plain sashes, including two twelve-pane sash dormers and twelve and eight-pane windows in the basement. The entrance features a six-panel door set within a Doric doorcase that has three-quarter columns, a full entablature, and a pediment. There is a deep platband that is slightly higher than that of the adjoining No. 25, and a modillion cornice with a blocking course and parapet runs along the top. A lead downpipe is positioned to the right, and there is a coped party division with a deep stack on the right side. The rear of the house has two bays, mainly with plain sashes, but one window has twelve panes, and the sashes are staggered.

The basement area is enclosed by simple railings that return at the doorway. The external fabric of the building shows the staggered construction history of the terrace, which maintains a broad consistency of detail despite variations in elevation and the building being completed in small sections, marked by straight joints.
