Description
Nos. 23 and 24 are two terrace houses located on the south side of New King Street, built between 1764 and 1770 with some 19th-century alterations. They are constructed from limestone ashlar, with some coursed rubble at the rear, and feature double Roman tile roofs. These generous townhouses have double mansard roofs, with the entry and staircase positioned to the left.
The exterior consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with each house having a single bay. Each house features two twelve-pane dormers, and below these are plain sash windows: tripartite at the second and first floors and paired at the ground floor, with two twelve-pane windows in the basements. The surrounds of the ground and first floors are splayed, and to the left of each house is a six-panel door with an architrave under a pediment supported by pilasters with consoles. The lower floors of No. 23 are painted, and there is a platband above the ground floor, along with a modillion cornice that is stopped at the ends, topped with a blocking course and parapet. The party divisions are coped, and there are deep ashlar stacks to the right, with a central lead downpipe. The rear of each house has two bays and two dormers, with No. 23 primarily featuring plain sashes with bars.
The interiors have not been inspected. The front of the houses is enclosed by simple railings on a stone curb, which return to the doorways. The external fabric of the buildings reflects the staggered construction history of the row, showing a broad consistency of detail across the terrace, albeit with variations in elevation, indicating that the buildings were constructed in small sections marked by straight joints.
