Description

No. 27 is a terrace house dating from 1764 to 1770, with alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. The house is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has a single bay front. It features plain sash windows. A single six-pane dormer window has a cambered head. The second and first floors have tripartite lights, the first floor's central light being arched. The ground floor has a paired sash window, and the basement has two twelve-pane windows. The left side has a six-panel door with a small transom light, set under a pediment supported by consoles, which overlaps the adjacent property. The two lowest floors are painted, including a platband. A modillion cornice is stopped on the left side, with a blocking course and parapet above. The straight joints on either side run the full height of the building, while the right party wall has a coped detail and deep ashlar stacks. The rear elevation has two bays, with two large glazing bar dormers above staggered sash windows, mostly plain but including two twelve-pane windows. The interior has not been inspected. A simple railing on a stone curb encloses the basement area, returning to the doorway. The external fabric reveals a staggered building history, with a broad consistency of detail across the full terrace, although variations in elevation are visible, with sections built separately and marked by straight joints, as seen on the right-hand side.
