Description

The terrace of three houses at numbers 5, 6, and 7 St Ann’s Place dates to circa 1771. Constructed of limestone ashlar with double Roman tile roofs, they form a short terrace on the east side of St Ann’s Place, originally off New King Street, overlooking a small, narrow court.

The houses are two storeys with an attic and basement, and are two and three windows wide. They feature twelve-pane sash windows in plain reveals. A Mansard roof is present, with two twelve-pane sash dormers each to numbers 6 and 7. Number 5 is narrower, covering only two bays, and lacks dormers. Number 6 has a glazed area in the pavement providing light to the basement. Each house has a six-panel door to the left, protected by a flat stone hood supported on brackets. A platband runs above the ground floor, situated directly over a continuous wooden lintel, and is topped by a small cavetto cornice that steps down at numbers 6 and 7, culminating in a deep blocking course and parapet. Coped party walls are present to the right of each house, incorporating an ashlar stack.

Reportedly, interior features include panelled partition walls and some stone fireplaces, although these have not been inspected. The houses were in poor condition but have since been fully restored by Aaron Evans, architect, in 1983-84. They represent a notable survival of artisanal housing laid out around a close.
