Description
9 Monmouth Place is a house in a row, with a lease dating back to 16th November 1774. The front was refenestrated in the 19th century and has undergone alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of limestone rubble and features a double Roman tile roof. It has a wide frontage on Monmouth Place and extends to a full extra storey at the rear, which has earlier details and a ridge roof with a fairly low pitch, possibly indicating it is a replacement.
The exterior consists of two storeys with a basement and three windows. The first floor has a wide twelve-pane window in plain surrounds at eaves level, above a deep and narrow twelve-pane window and a fifteen-pane window. There is an off-centre left 20th-century panelled door in a flush surround, accessed by three steps, with a basement opening featuring a grille to the left. To the right, there is a bay that includes some ashlar and appears to have been inserted or rebuilt. A stack to the left is raised in ashlar to rise above the adjacent gable.
At the rear, there are two three-light small pane casements in ovolo mould stone mullioned casements that are set slightly proud of the rubble on the upper two floors, with one located at lower ground level to the right. There is also an eight-pane light set lower and near the centre under a new lintel, and the lower ground level has a small inserted light to the left of a 20th-century glazed door in a broad plain surround. The interior has not been inspected.
