Description
No. 21 is a terrace house dating from around 1770, located on the south side of Great Stanhope Street. It is constructed from limestone ashlar with a rubble rear and features a slate mansard roof. The house has a double depth plan, being wider at the front than at the rear, which reflects the change in direction of the party divisions.
The exterior consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with the rear developed as a full four storeys due to the sloping site. The front has two windows, all of which are glazing bar sashes. There is a paired twelve-pane dormer above a twelve-pane window, a modified fifteen-pane window at the first floor, and paired twelve-pane windows at the ground floor and basement, all set in splayed surrounds. To the left, there is an original six-panel door framed by a stone Doric pilaster doorcase topped with a closed pediment. The building features a plinth, a first-floor platband, a moulded cornice, a blocking course, a parapet, coped party divisions, and deep ashlar stacks to the right. A straight joint marks the junction with No. 20, and there is a break in the continuity of details. No. 22, to the left, is slightly stepped forward.
At the rear, the house is slightly inset from No. 20 and has a narrow two-bay design with varied window sizes, extending to four storeys. There are staircase windows to the right at half levels, and the roof includes small single and large two-light casement dormers, with the mansard roof lower than that of No. 20. The rear features coursed rubble walling but has an ashlar parapet.
The front basement area is enclosed by simple spearhead railings on an ashlar curb with a rounded top. This house is part of a terrace that shows variations reflecting the speculative nature of the original development.
