Description

Two terrace houses, dating from around 1770. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with slate roofs. The houses are double-depth, and the site falls away to the rear, resulting in five visible storeys at the back. Each house has two windows per floor, mostly plain sash windows set within splayed surrounds. No. 22 has a dormer with sixteen panes, while No. 23 has a dormer with twenty panes and a four-pane window on the first floor. The first-floor windows of No. 22 have cast iron balconettes. The front entrances are within stone doorcases featuring Doric columns, and the one at No. 22 is painted. The exterior details include a plinth, a platband on the first floor, a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet. There are coped end party divisions and large shared central stacks. The rear elevation, also in ashlar, has a full attic storey concealing a mansard roof, with sash windows on five levels, plus doorways leading to the basement. The interior has not been inspected. Basement areas are enclosed by spearhead railings on an ashlar curb with rounded tops; a gate to the left of No. 23 provides access to an inserted staircase.
