Description

Three terrace houses dating from around 1770. They are constructed of limestone ashlar to the front, with rubble to the rear, and have slate roofs. The houses are double depth, with steep mansard roofs, and appear as full four storeys to the rear due to the sloping ground. Each house has two windows to the front, with variations in the glazing bar sashes. No. 18 features a twelve-pane dormer, twelve-pane windows to the second and first floors, an oversized sixteen-pane window in a splayed surround to the ground floor, and a deep twelve-pane window to the basement. A six-panel door is set within a stone Doric doorcase with three-quarter columns and a closed pediment. No. 19 is similar, but with a paired twelve-pane dormer and a large sixteen-pane window to the basement. No. 20 has a sixteen-pane dormer and a tripartite four:eight:four-pane window to the ground floor, with paired twelve-pane windows to the basement. All houses have a plinth, a platband to the first floor, a moulded cornice with a blocking course, and a parapet, with paired chimneys rising above the coped party walls. The rear elevation features triple twelve-pane dormers (paired at No. 20), above twelve-pane sashes over four floors, with a basement-level door. The rear walls are of coursed rubble, with an ashlar parapet and mouldings. The interiors have not been inspected. Basement areas are enclosed by simple spearhead railings on an ashlar curb with a rounded top, returning at the doorways. These houses were built together as part of a speculative development; subtle variations in layout are evident, but the exteriors retain most of their original features, including those at the rear.
