Description
No. 1 Market Place is a house built in 1664, extensively remodelled in 1793 with 19th-century alterations and additions. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and has a concrete tiled roof with two ridge stacks, one capped off, with ashlar bases and a brick shaft. The building is two storeys high with cellars and has a two-bay front. On the right side, there is a 19th-century six-panelled door with an overlight and panelled reveals, which is sheltered by a large ornate timber porch supported by single turned balusters on an ashlar base. The porch features a dentillated leaded hood with carved arched brackets. To the left of the door is a margin light sash window, and on the first floor, there are two similar windows. All windows have ashlar surrounds with flat lintels and raised keystones. A date stone reading "1664" is located beside the ground floor window lintel, likely reset. The side front has four bays, with a segmental headed archway on the ground floor that contains planked double doors and three margin lights to the right. The first floor has four similar windows. There are three small square openings at ground level for the cellar. At the rear, there is a high-level date stone from 1793.
Inside, the building retains a stick baluster staircase with a carved string and turned and knopped newels. The cellar features a 17th-century beam and joists.
