Description

No. 4 Market Place is a house dating from the 17th century, with later alterations in the 18th century, additions from the 19th century, and modifications in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and has stone-coped slate roofs with two gable stacks that have stone plinths and brick shafts. The building has an L-shaped plan and is two storeys high with attics, presenting an irregular two-bay front. To the right, there is a lower single-bay two-storey wing with an asbestos slate roof.

The central entrance consists of a 20th-century half-glazed door, which is sheltered by an open ornate 19th-century timber porch. This porch has chamfered supports on an ashlar base and a slate hipped roof supported by curved and knopped brackets. To the left of the entrance is a glazing bar sash window, and to the right is a 19th-century bow window with a slate-roofed bracketed hood above it. On the first floor, there are three glazing bar sash windows, all of which have stone surrounds, flat stone lintels, and raised keystones. At the eaves level of the roof, there are two glazing bar sash dormers with hipped slate roofs and leaded cheeks. Inside, the building retains a simply chamfered beam with run-out stops.
