Description
No. 50 St Mary Street is a house dating from the 17th century, which was refronted in the early 19th century. It features a facade made of limestone ashlar and a rubblestone rear, topped with a double-pitched stone slate roof that is hipped at the rear wing. There is a stone stack with a brick shaft located at the rear right. The building has a 4-unit plan with a rear wing and stands two storeys tall with a four-window range.
The exterior includes a parapet, cornice, and bands for the lintels and sills, although the ground-floor sills are now at street level due to the road being raised. The first floor has early to mid-18th century 6/6-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars, while the ground floor features late 20th-century replacements. The window to the far right, located above the door, has a wider spacing, suggesting that the original door was positioned inside to the right, leaving a service room to the far right. Above the door, there is a shallow hood supported by moulded stone brackets, leading to a 19th-century door with three tall panels over three short ones. At the rear, there are two- and three-light windows with cyma-moulded mullions. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
