Description
No. 16, St Mary Street is a house dating from the early 17th century, which was refronted in the early 18th century. It is constructed with render over limestone rubble, with freestone quoins, a plinth, and stone dressings. The roof is covered in stone slates, hipped to the left with two small hipped dormers, and features moulded ashlar stacks to the rear left and the right gable end. The building has an L-shaped plan with an early 19th-century extension.
The exterior has two storeys and an attic, with a five-window range. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. The 6/6-pane sash windows have raised cyma-moulded architraves, with cornices to those on the ground floor. Two windows face east on the left facade, and three windows face north on the right. A six-panel door, glazed to the top, with a raised and fielded panel design, and a cast-iron knocker, is set within a raised cyma-moulded architrave, with a semicircular coved hood, possibly originally a shell hood, supported by plain brackets. Both inner facades of the L shape face the street.
The interior includes a blocked, original 3-light window with cavetto moulded mullions to the ground floor of the south party wall. There is a good original open-well staircase with closed strings, a moulded handrail, square newels, and moulded balusters. An original kitchen fireplace, with a moulded surround, remains. The roof was re-roofed with king-post collar trusses.
