Description
The stable block, along with attached walls and gate piers, dates to the early 18th century and the 19th century, and is situated near St Mary House (number 15) in Chippenham. The stable block has a largely L-shaped layout. The original 18th-century section is built of rubble stone with freestone quoins and dressings, topped with a stone slate roof. A 19th-century wing, also of rubble stone with matching quoins and dressings, is attached to the right, utilising English bond brickwork. The front-facing gable of the 18th-century section has a freestone surround to a planked door, which leads to a loading bay over modern garage doors set within brick jambs. A wide 18th-century planked door is set within a chamfered freestone architrave on the right return. The 19th-century wing has an open ground floor with a small planked door above, and a gabled return showing exposed rafter ends. The rear elevation, where the 18th and 19th-century sections meet, has a leaded, cyma-moulded two-light window with square lights in the older section, and a fixed six-pane window in the newer section. The interior was remodelled in the late 19th century, featuring late 19th-century roof trusses. The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
The site is enclosed by coped rubble stone walls. To the front, a wall approximately 4 metres high sweeps down to 2 metres and extends roughly 10 metres forward to the street, meeting a low pier with a pyramidal cap. A similar pier flanks a widened 20th-century entrance, before the wall, approximately 1.5 metres high, fronts St Mary House. Further, similar gate piers, around 2 metres high, are positioned towards the centre of the wall. The wall bordering the churchyard to the right (north) extends for about 10 metres and continues to the house. A wall, approximately 3 metres high, runs to the rear of the stable, approximately 10 metres, turns north, and bounds the site for about 40 metres. A blocked doorway with a chamfered, rusticated freestone architrave is located approximately 10 metres from the left corner. At the right end, the wall sweeps upwards, turns forward for approximately 10 metres, sweeps up again to about 4 metres, and attaches to the house with a freestone arch and a 20th-century door leading to the churchyard.
