Description

This is a house, built around 1770, and later converted into flats. It is located on St Mary Street, Chippenham, and exhibits group value as a significant example of local architecture. The facade and side walls are constructed from limestone ashlar, while the rear is of rubble stone, topped by a hipped roof covered in stone slates. The house has a double-depth plan.

The building is three storeys high and has a symmetrical facade of five bays. The front has 6/6-pane sash windows with horns, and various modern windows to the rear. A parapet, cornice, platband, and plinth run along the facade, with chamfered quoins adding detail. The central three bays project slightly forward, beneath a pediment. Steps lead to a stone doorcase with engaged Tuscan columns, an entablature, and a pediment, sheltering a raised-and-fielded 6-panel door. Full-height canted bays are present on both returns, featuring 6/6-pane sash windows and 2- and 3-light sashes towards the rear.

The interior has been altered and was not inspected during the listing process.
