Description

Sudbury County School, built in 1832, is a school and caretakers house made of red brick with sandstone detailing. It features Welsh slate roofs with stone coped gables, brick gable stacks, a ridge ventilator, and square finials. The building has one and two storeys, with a double height schoolroom that includes lean-to covered ways with partial infill. The end walls rise above the lean-tos to double height.

The caretakers house is located at the west end and has a west elevation with three bays. The central bay projects and features a two-storey design with a pedimented gable and pilaster strips. Access is via a doorway that is elevated by three stone steps, leading to a half-glazed door with a stone lintel and a moulded hoodmould above. There is a window above this door, also with a stone lintel, moulded hoodmould, and cast iron Gothick lights. To the left and right are flat-roofed single-storey bays, each with similar windows.

The north and south elevations of the schoolroom have lean-to covered ways supported by iron columns, with part brick infill. Above these are clerestory windows featuring Gothick iron casements, divided by four brick pews. An additional bay was added to the east in 1877. Inside the schoolroom, the structure is supported by two rows of iron columns.
