Description

Butchers House and Shop and Number 10 is a terrace of two cottages and a shop, built in the early 19th century and around 1875, likely designed by George Devey. The structure is made of red brick with blue brick diaper work and features plain tile roofs, which include four brick ridge stacks and one gable stack. The gables are brick coped with plain kneelers. The building is two storeys high and has a T-plan layout, with a long range facing School Lane and a shorter range towards Main Road.

The east elevation consists of eight bays, featuring an off-centre shop front from around 1875. This shop front is timber framed, with a central doorway that has a moulded arch and stable-type doors, flanked by glazing bar sash windows. There are hinged shutters with small heart-shaped holes. Above the shop front, there is a deeply coved cornice topped with a hipped tiled roof. To the right of the shop front, there is a doorway with casements on either side and a panelled door, also flanked by glazing bar sashes. On the left side of the shop front, there are two 3-light casement windows under segmental heads, a doorway with a segmental head and a plank door, and a cart entrance with a timber lintel. The first floor features four 3-light casements and three 2-light casements, the latter located above the shop front, all with flat arches. The ground floor of the left-hand part displays early 19th-century brickwork.

The north elevation facing Main Road has three bays, with an off-centre doorway that features a round arch and a moulded stone surround, leading to a panelled door. To the left, there is a 2-light wooden casement with a flush stone surround, and to the right, there are two similar windows. Above, there are three 2-light half dormers with hipped roofs.
