Description
The Laurels is a house and adjoining shop located on Main Street in Sudbury. It was built in the early 18th century and later modified in 1900 by Theobold Coxon, the estate manager. The building is constructed of red brick with some stone dressings and features a plain tile roof with two brick stacks. It has two storeys and a basement, with a chamfered plinth.
The south elevation has four bays and includes two sets of double-flight stone steps flanked by low coped walls. There is one 18th-century three-light chamfered stone mullion window in the basement. The shop front is situated to the left and features canted bay windows on either side of the door. Above, there are two two-light windows in a single half dormer with a shaped gable, which displays the date 1900.
The house section to the right has a central doorway with a bolection moulded stone doorcase topped with a segmental pediment. On either side of the doorway are three-light casement windows beneath keyed wedge lintels. A band of brick corbels above supports a gutter. There are three two-light casement windows above in half dormers, each with shaped gables and a geometrical pattern of raised brickwork. The building is listed for its group value only.
