Description
The Old Gas Works, now functioning as blacksmiths, was built in 1874 and is attributed to the architect George Devey. The building is constructed of red brick featuring orange brick diaper work, with sandstone dressings and plain tile roofs that also display blue tile diaper work. It showcases Flemish gables and has a lateral brick stack with paired diamond plan shafts. The eaves cornice is adorned with brick dentils.
This single-storey structure has tall central sections flanked by lower wings. The north elevation features a prominent tall Flemish gabled centre bay, which includes a large 20th-century opening with a rolled steel joist lintel at ground level. Above this opening is a blind opening framed with stone and a brick relieving arch, topped by a circular ventilator. The walls on either side are plain but include diaper work. The east elevation has doorways with chamfered stone surrounds and a circular ventilation hole.
