Description

The boundary wall with gate piers and gates to Spring Hill and Elmfield is a mid-19th century structure located on Cumberland Road in Headingley, Leeds. It features coursed gritstone walling and wrought-iron gates. The wall runs approximately 100 meters along the roadside as the garden wall for Spring Hill, standing about 3 meters high and rising with the slope of the hill. The coping is rounded, and part of the wall near the house has been lowered. At the northern end, the wall returns eastward to connect with the former coach house behind Spring Hill, extending about 15 meters. At the southern end, the two driveways leading to Elmfield and Spring Hill are flanked by lower walling for about 20 meters.

There are three gateways in total. At the northern end, the entrance to the rear yard of Spring Hill is flanked by walling topped with stepped ashlar pyramid capstones. At the southern end, the left gateway features similar piers and a pair of gates with bars, dog bars, and roundels on the lock rail. The right gateway is older in style, with fine monolithic square piers that have a deep cornice and shallow pyramid capstones, along with paired gates that have 'X' braces below the lock rail, 'O' above, and a depressed top rail with leaf finials on the bars. The low flanking walls have chamfered ashlar coping, and there is a short stretch of railing in a similar style. To the right, the wall is approximately 2 meters high with gabled coping. The layout of the wall and driveways indicates that the grounds of Elmfield originally extended to the road edge before being sold off for the development of Spring Hill. This structure is included for its group value with Spring Hill, No. 14, and Nos 12 and 13 Elmfield.
