Description
Devonshire Hall is a hall of residence for the University of Leeds, built in 1928 by architects J.C. Proctor and F.L. Charlton. The building features snecked stonework on the lower walls and rendered surfaces above, topped with slate roofs. It stands three storeys high with attics and includes single-storey linking ranges, forming a courtyard complex connected to two mid-19th century semi-detached houses on the site. The main block, which faces east, is five bays wide, with L-shaped wings extending at right angles towards Cumberland Road.
Designed in a 17th century Scottish Baronial style, the hall's notable features include a triple-arched main facade with a central oriel that rises through two storeys to a crenellated clock turret. The entrance has board doors with iron studs and fittings, and there are carved lintels above. The side wings display four-centred arches in square chamfered surrounds, topped with shields and stepped hoodmoulds. Additional architectural details include gabled projecting staircase bays, a colonnaded ground floor at the rear of the wings, and an attic storey featuring gabled three-light dormers.
The interior has not been inspected. Initially, the University leased the former Wesleyan College on Headingley Lane as a residence from around 1924 to 1930, naming it Devonshire Hall after the then Chancellor. As the lease expired, the Regent Court Hotel was purchased and extended on this site, and when the new hall was completed, the name was transferred. The architect also designed the forecourt to the Leeds Town Hall and the Algernon Firth Institute of Pathology on St George's Road.
